Title: Hard drive failure
Post by: Dave on 21.12.2022, 08:35
One of the hard drives in my new 2 slot NAS drive, that I bought in May this year, has failed. I am in the process of trying to get a replacement from the company it came from, but in the mean time I'm copying all the files from the remaining drive to a new hard drive delivered yesterday. The total data on this drive was just over 2.5TB. As you can see from the image it has a long way to go...and that's using ethernet 1GB. At the moment it's just copying the albums folder I have the singles and other stuff to do after that. I worry that the other the one I'm copying will fail now.

I'm just glad that it was set up as RAID.

QuoteRAID ("redundant array of inexpensive disks"[1] or "redundant array of independent disks"[2]) is a data storage virtualization technology that combines multiple physical disk drive components into one or more logical units for the purposes of data redundancy, performance improvement, or both.

It's the first time in years that I've had a hard drive fail and especially this early in it's life.

My sympathy goes out to you mate  :doh

This is why I have complete redundant systems for my Radio Station, it costs
a fortune to double everything but it helps me sleep a lot better a night.

Thanks BB.

I bought a new 6TB drive and copied everything to that as a temporary backup. If the other drive had failed I'd have lost everything.

So it's all safe now until they send the replacement drive under the warranty

It wasn't that expensive it was £142 from ebuyer

I'm glad I got it now as DPD, who are the delivery company for the sellers, are now on holiday till the new year.

This also works well for me as I'm now in Tunisia till next Friday.

Oh dear that doesn't sound good. Now I'm back home I have sorted the delivery exchange for the damaged drive, which hopefully will come on Tuesday.

I've now also ordered a USB type C dual hard drive dock too as the old one I have is a bit slower than the new type c ones.

I guess I'll just have to wait and see if it holds out. I think I have a backup drive installed with an older version of linux installed on it. I'll have to check and try to reformat it for windows to temporarily use it until I can upgrade.
